2006-07-05 - 4:59 p.m. Wow. What a 4th of July. The day started bright and early around 6:00 when I had to get up. I am not a morning person and having to get up at that time just blows. Anyway, I got up and got crankin so I could go march in the 4th of July parade in Montreat. For those not "in the know" it's where our Scottish Society is based, where the Presbyterian Church Assembly is, and where Billy Graham lives. We got there about 2 hours before the parade, but there were almost no parking places to be had by then. Good Grief! I would hate to think that next year I'll have to pitch a tent in order to get a spot. I parked on the grass. The parade itself was ok, except that we had to play a rinky-dinky tune that most of us hate to play. We had to play it because half the band didn't know their damn music....or they rushed like hell. We've got one guy who has been playing with us for years, but STILL can't play without being way ahead of everyone else. Rhythmically challenged he is and it makes it rough on the rest of us. Plus, I believe our pipe major punished us for it yesterday because we didn't get a break in our playing. I mean we played the same little ditty for at least 10-15 times...without stopping! I was whipped when he finally let us quit. After we were all done, I went home, took a shower, grilled a hot dog, and sat down and watched a tad of "Star Trek" on G4. I made it through "Space Seed" but kind of dozed during "The Doomsday Machine". Myself, Rhi and another friend had planned to get together, grill a burger, then go downtown to see the fireworks. Well, our plans altered only slightly. We did the burger thing, but since it had already rained once and looked like it was going to do it again...we opted for a movie instead of fireworks. First, however, we needed to get a beer. We hauled over to the local mall where we got our movie tickets, then walked around the mall (it was closed) to the bar. We were practically the only people in the place. Our bartender was greatly amused by us and revealed himself to be as geeky as the rest of us when we ended up having a discussion about comic books. We also swerved off track a bit and ventured into the realm of horror movies a tad too. Cute guy. It was close to movie time and, uh-oh, it had started to freakin' pour rain outside. This did not make me happy, since we walked around the mall to get there. However, our bartender rescued us and volunteered to escort us through the closed mall to the other side so we wouldn't get drenched! Nice guy, too. We ended up seeing "The Devil Wears Prada" which was cute and rather entertaining. Absolute light fluff that required no heavy thinking at all, but still good. Got home at a decent hour and reflected upon my day... Marched in a small, home-town parade. So, how freakin' American is all of that?! :)
